At a pivotal moment for Europe’s tire industry, the Nokian Tyres factory in Oradea is emerging as one of the region’s most significant industrial investments. Designed as the world’s first full-scale tire factory with zero CO\u2082 emissions (Scope 1 and 2), the Romanian facility sets a new benchmark for sustainable, highly automated manufacturing. As production continues to ramp up, the plant is becoming a cornerstone of Nokian Tyres’ global manufacturing network and a key hub for serving customers across Central and Southern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this interview with Automotive Today<\/em>, Teppo Huovila, Vice President \u2013 Romania Operations and Global Quality at Nokian Tyres<\/strong>, discusses his priorities in his new leadership role, the strategic importance of the Oradea factory, the technologies shaping its future, and the company’s long-term vision for growth, quality, and sustainable manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What will be your top three priorities during your first 12 months as Managing Director and Vice President of Nokian Tyres Romania Operations?<\/strong> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Key priorities include supporting factory development according to company targets, ensuring premium quality and building competent teams and personnel satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How do you define success for your first year in this position? Which milestones would you like to achieve?<\/strong> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are milestones and metrics related to the listed priorities. Naturally also maintaining high customer satisfaction is a top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What role will the Oradea factory play in strengthening Nokian Tyres’ competitiveness in the European market?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Once fully completed Oradea will be our largest production facility, representing some 40 per cent of the total production volume. Oradea is and will be the main production source for our newest product lines for the Central and Southern European markets. The Romanian factory is already supporting growth in Central Europe, and its ramp-up is developing according to plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What investments or expansion plans can we expect in Romania over the coming years?<\/strong> \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are still in the ramp-up phase at the factory with certain on-going investments.Production ramp-up is progressing well and we are very much focusing on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What technologies or manufacturing innovations will have the biggest impact on the Oradea facility in the coming years?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Oradea factory uses many of the latest generation manufacturing technologies together with comprehensive quality assurance systems. Use of AI tools will further enhance certain processes in coming years, not only in manufacturing but also in linked upstream and downstreamoperations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What competitive advantages does the Oradea site offer compared with other manufacturing locations in Europe?<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n Oradea site is a highly automated plant and the first full-scale zero CO2 emission (Scope 1 and 2) tire factory in the world. All energy used in the factory is from zero CO2 sources.
