OMV Petrom: EU supports expansion of electric vehicle charging network along a key Central European corridor
384 new charging points connect Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania, strengthening electric mobility across Central and Eastern Europe
OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeastern Europe, has completed an EU-supported project to expand electric mobility infrastructure by installing 384 charging points along the TEN-T corridor connecting Bratislava, Budapest, Oradea, and Cluj-Napoca.
“We have rapidly expanded our network from approximately 120 charging points in 2022 to around 1,500 today across the region. We are Romania’s number one mobility provider, and this project strengthens a key transit corridor while helping make electric mobility a practical option for drivers. As the electric vehicle market is still developing, public funding remains essential to expanding infrastructure and ensuring its economic viability,” said Radu Căprău, Member of the Executive Board of OMV Petrom responsible for Refining and Marketing.
The total value of the project at the time of contracting was approximately EUR 40 million, of which up to EUR 12 million consists of European Union grants allocated to Romania through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
Key Project Highlights
- 384 ultra-fast charging points installed across Romania, Hungary, and Slovakia
- Locations along the TEN-T corridor, including: Bratislava, Budapest, Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Tulcea, Constanța, Giurgiu, Focșani, Bacău, Suceava, and others
- Total investment: approximately EUR 40 million
- Romania: 304 charging points across 74 locations
- Hungary: 28 charging points across 7 locations
- Slovakia: 52 charging points across 11 locations
The project contributes to the EU’s objective of developing interoperable alternative fuels infrastructure along the TEN-T corridors, enabling cross-border travel and supporting the decarbonisation of transport.
The project was implemented by a consortium led by OMV Petrom Marketing S.R.L., together with OMV Hungária KFT and OMV Slovensko s.r.o., in partnership with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
