Hyundai and Michelin join forces to develop next-generation tires for electric vehicles
Hyundai Motor Group has signed a third memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Michelin to accelerate tire technology innovations that will lead the future mobility market. This agreement continues the partnership established through MOUs signed in 2017 and 2022.
Under the new three-year partnership, the two companies will collaborate on:
- Joint R&D of extreme-low rolling resistance tires to improve fuel efficiency and high-performance tires to enhance handling safety
- Enhancing tire performance for premium EVs, which demand cutting-edge tire technology for high performance, safety, and extended range
- Establishing a virtual tire development system for off-road applications
- Advancing SmartGrip technology to enhance braking performance and efficiency
“Through the third phase of technological collaboration with Michelin, we expect to achieve tire technology innovations that will lead the future mobility market,” said Yongsuk Shin, Vice President and Head of Genesis Engineering Design Center at Hyundai Motor Group, “By leveraging the specialized capabilities of both companies in mobility and tire technologies, we will utilize advanced solutions.”
The MOU signed in 2017 contributed to the development of tire technologies for the Hyundai IONIQ 5, while the 2022 agreement achieved significant progress in tire wear prediction and braking performance enhancement.
